Chaite Dashain

Nepal is enriched with its own cultural varieties. People from different ethnic group celebrate various festivals of their own typical identity and values. Among all these festivals ‘Dashian’ has its own significance. This is the main festival amongst majority of Nepalese community. This festival is celebrated twice a year. The Dashian which is celebrated in the month of Ashwin is known as Bada-Dashain whereas, the Dashain celebrated in the month of Chaitra is known as ‘Chaite Dashain’. Among the four Nawaratras of the year, the Nawaratras of Ashwin and Chaitra is considered as the Jagrat Dashain. Both of the Dashain festival is the occasion to worship goddess Durga. Chaite Dsahain is celebrated as ‘Basanti Nawarati’ as well. The Astami tithi(according to lunar calendar) of Chaite Dashain is celebrated as a special day in this festival. Dashain is celebrated as the occasion for celebrating Goddess Durga for protecting the entire world from the demons and humanoid beings. Devout offers homage to Godess Durga on Nawaratri. There is a tradition to worship Astamatrkai on this auspicious day. People believes that, main Dashian in Chaitra was later shifted to Ashwin due to various health issues in the month of Chaitra as, Chaitra is the summer season and people loves to enjoy stodge during festivals. Immediately after Chaite Dashain, Neplases celebrates Ram Nawami. There are various explanations on the fact that during Treta Yug, Ram worshipped Goddess Durga and received victory over Rawana. During Chaite Dashain lot of devotees visit various temples and pilgrimage of Goddess Durga, Kali etc to offer homage. People offer homage to Goddess Durga at their home as well. Sanctuaries are filled with melodious sound of prayers, hymn of praise of goddess durga and Chandi (Durga-Saptashati). Some people enchant hymn of praise of Durga and Chandi by themselves whereas, some listen the praise from their Gurus and Purohits. Some of the committee volunteer facilitates devotees in crowed temples for offerings.
It is believed that home which not offers homage to goddess Durga brings misfortune. Goddess Durga is worshipped as destroyer of trouble and all hazards. It is believed that she saves us from all distress. In various Shaktipiths of Nepal people sacrifice in Asthami tithi(Lunar Calander) during Chaite Dashain. This is a festival of joy and happiness. It is believed that receiving Prasad of goddess Durga helps to prosper health. Now a day people enjoy this festival with consumption of alcoholic beverages as well as various non vegetarian foods. This festival endures personal relation and relationship with friends and families as people prefer visiting each other and wishing for prosperity with harmony but following bad tradition in the name of celebration is totally wrong. It is our responsibility to eliminate bad practices which are seen in our culture and save the ancient eastern culture by realizing their significance. It is the high time that parents need to aware their wards to save and follow the ancient culture which holds our identity. We should not let our culture introduce to any one in a wrong way. May goddess Durga bless all of us with virtue.
